The International Society for the History of the Map and the Newberry Library’s Hermon Dunlap Smith Center for the History of Cartography invite participants for the inaugural Map History Writing Workshop. Meant for graduate students, early career scholars, and scholars writing about map history for the first time, this workshop will bring together a cohort of people working on articles or book chapters about map history. The Workshop is designed to help refine scholarship in the field of the history of maps and mapping while also building a community of rising scholars in the field. The Workshop will be fully remote.
Structure:
The workshop will meet on Zoom up to 6 times for 1.5-2 hours each over the course of the first half of 2027, depending on the number of participants. Each meeting will focus on the precirculated writing of one participant. For each meeting, the organizers in consultation with the presenter will recruit 2-3 experts in the field as respondents. Along with these experts, the other participants will then discuss the presenter’s writing with attention both to content and argumentation.
Participants in the workshop should be prepared to:
- Attend all meetings of the workshop
- Read each paper before each meeting
- Circulate a draft of an article or chapter (8,000-12,000 words) in advance of their assigned meeting
- Be or become a member of ISHMap before the start of the workshop

- 300-500 abstract of the article or book chapter
- Commitment to attending meetings
- Commitment to having writing prepared to pre-circulate at least 2 weeks in advance
